A Case Study reveals interesting data:
Reduction in Cholesterol and Improving Quality of Life in a Patient with Dyslipidemia Undergoing Chiropractic Care
(9/30/11). A case study in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research illustrated changes in cholesterol levels and quality of life in a patient following chiropractic care.
“Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States.” stated Dr. Mccann, a Brookfield-based, D.C., who follows health and wellness issues closely in professional journals and other publications, “Among the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia is cited as a major risk factor. Dyslipidemia is a combination of ill-favored cholesterol levels in the circulating blood, namely Low Density Lipoprotien (LDL).”
In this case study, a 49 year old female presented with neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain, dyslipidemia and vertebral subluxations. Lipid lowering statins were prescribed by her medical physician, but using her own judgment, she elected not to take them.
“Statins are the number one prescribed drug for the treatment of dyslipidemia. Statins decrease the body’s ability to produced LDL and have been shown to moderately increase HDL leading to better overall cholesterol levels. Indeed, recent trials have emphasized the use of statins in the fight against cardiovascular disease, however overall mortality is not reduced even though reductions of cardiovascular deaths were seen. This was due to a rise in deaths from other causes. It is also important to realize that cholesterol itself is not the enemy; cholesterol is made by the body and is essential for human life,” states Dr. McCann.
The patient was treated with Diversified and Chiropractic Biomechanics of Posture (CPT) techniques over a six-month time span. During initial care, her total cholesterol improved from 221 to 170 mg/dL. Her LDL went from 153 to 109 mg/dL and HDL went from 33 to 38 mg/dL. Triglycerides improved from 241 to 199 mg/DL and quality of life scores were increased in eight categories. No other interventions were used
In 1992, a retrospective study was conducted, and cholesterol lab values were taken on ten randomly selected subjects over a three-year period. Results showed that LDL and total cholesterol decreased in 70% of the subjects, bringing 80% of the subjects originally classified as borderline high to high-risk down to desirable levels following chiropractic care.
“This suggested relationship between regular chiropractic care for improved function, which can allow the body to improve homeostasis, including improvement of blood lipid levels”, explained Dr. McCann “The clinical process documented in this report suggests that the combination of Diversified and CBP chiropractic care reduces subluxations and stress on the spinal column and nervous system, and as a result of this reduced stress, there is a reduction of dysponesis, which is evidenced by improved quality of life and blood serum cholesterol levels. Dysponesis refers to errors in physical reactions to various stimuli, which as a result, produce functional disorders in the body. This is very promising data and I highly encourage more research, both quantitative and qualitative, in this area of patient care.”

Successful Conception Following Reduction of
Vertebral Subluxation in a 31 Year Old Woman
(10/7/11,
The woman presented to a chiropractic office with the intent of improving overall health. Her health history included headaches, digestive complaints and SI joint pain with bending. She had also been unable to conceive after nine months of attempting to do so previous to presenting to this office. Brookfield-based Dr. Patrick McCann, D.C., follows health and wellness issues closely in professional journals and other publications states, “Infertility has been estimated to affect 7.3 million American women,” said Dr. McCann, “and only 11% of women aged 29 and younger are deemed infertile, whereas after 30 that number jumps from 17% and 22.6% after the age of 35.”
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. This study discusses a case of a 31-year-old woman who had attempted to conceive for nine months.
In this case, an initial examination of the nervous system showed poor function of the autonomic and motor systems. The woman was recommended a course of care consisting of regular chiropractic adjustments. After one and a half months of getting adjusted for the purposes of correcting vertebral subluxations she was able to conceive, however the first pregnancy was not viable because there was no genetic material in the egg – a common reason for miscarriage.
Two months later, while still under chiropractic care, she conceived again and this pregnancy was carried to term with no complications, while staying on a wellness schedule of chiropractic adjustments at a frequency of one visit per week. “Through the detection and
correction of vertebral subluxations and the application of adjustments,” Dr. McCann related, “a chiropractor restores control to the body so the person can better use his or her natural inborn ability to self regulate and heal.”
“Chiropractors theorize that one of the many problems a woman could have as a direct result of a poorly functioning nervous system is the inability to conceive” said Dr. McCann.
“This is just one study of many showing how chiropractic can positively affect conception,” explained Dr. McCann, “however it should be emphasized that chiropractic care should not be utilized as a treatment for fertility, but for restoring optimal nervous system function by the correcting of subluxations.”

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Following Chiropractic Adjustments

Approximately 8 million children in the
A male child was diagnosed by a psychiatrist at age 3 with ADHD, due to behaviors such as uncontrolled violent outbreaks, difficulty following directions, and inability to function in social situations. From 3-7 years the child was prescribed anti-psychotropic medications, which only moderately controlled the patient’s behavior. His parents were under extreme stress attempting to cope with their child’s aggressive behavior and sought chiropractic care as a last resort at age 7.
“Within one month of care the patient demonstrated significant behavior improvements.” Dr. McCann related. “The parents reported the child was significantly calmer, “less defiant,” and had reduced aggressive behavior.”
Working with the psychiatrist after 5 months of chiropractic care the child was able to be weaned off all psychotropic medication without any relapse of prior behavior.
“Chiropractic care of children with ADHD has some evidence in the published literature,” explained Dr. McCann, “so it is possible that a mechanical and/or neurological dysfunction could be contributing to a patient’s presentation as well as explain the success of chiropractic care with some cases. Greater research is needed into the study of chiropractic care of pediatric patients presenting with ADHD.”

Local Chiropractors Welcome Space Age Technology
McCann Chiropractic of Brookfield is among a growing number of chiropractic offices that have upgraded their level of care to include technology that has benefited Super Bowl champions, Olympic gold medalists, and numerous A-list celebrities. An earlier version of sEMG technology was even used in the space program.
“You don’t have to be an astronaut or a world-class athlete to want your body operating efficiently. This technology will allow us to have a greater impact on the overall health of our community,” said McCann Chiropractic’s Dr. Patrick McCann
The Insight Discovery Subluxation Station was developed by Chiropractic Leadership Alliance (CLA), a New Jersey-based company, and has been certified by The Space Foundation, a non-profit agency founded in cooperation with NASA. The Insight allows chiropractors to scan their patients’ neurospinal health. These scans easily and accurately identify areas of nerve interference that may be preventing one’s nervous system from operating efficiently. When one’s nervous system is functioning at peak capacity, the human body has more energy, a greater resistance to disease and less need for pain. Once pinpointed via the technology, chiropractic adjustments are then utilized to remove the area(s) of nerve disruption.
NASA used an earlier version of sEMG technology on two shuttle missions—STS48 and STS50—to evaluate the physical attributes of astronauts. The space agency and CLA were recently praised on Capitol Hill for introducing this technology to the general public.
“Lost in the romanticism of space travel is NASA’s development of technologies that are changing – if not saving – lives,” stated Representative Nick Lampson (D-TX), who leads the effort to increase government funding for space exploration and scientific technology development.
McCann Chiropractic’s investment comes at a time when chiropractic’s popularity is rising while an over-medicated public has become wary of the pharmaceutical industry.
“We can now offer proof as to the need for care and the progress that one make while under care. The short story is, we’re changing lives,” concluded Dr. Kate McCann.

Trevor
When we first brought our son Trevor to see our chiropractor he was not talking, eating had become nearly impossible for him, and he was drooling constantly. He was on medication to help stop the drooling, but he was continuing to soak through five to six shirts per day.
Trevor has increasingly improved. In just one week after beginning care Trevor was able to discontinue the drooling medication. He is speaking full sentences and communication has become clearer. He is eating bites and chewing his food – a huge improvement- as before he would choke on just small amounts. He has also been able to reduce his anti-seizure medication that he takes for epilepsy. He was taking 150cc of anti-seizure medication when he first started care and in just a year was taking 5cc without any seizure activity.
Relatives could not believe the change they saw from one year to the next.
Our chiropractor prayed for Trevor on our first visit, which touched our hearts deeply. The thought that a doctor cared that much for our son and his health – it was wonderful.
We drive 8-9 hours round trip, sometimes multiple times per week, to continue care for Trevor and our family and it is well worth it.
We bless the family, friends, and doctors we have come to know at our chiropractor’s office and we are eternally grateful for the great care they have
given to Trevor and our family.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns immediately checked for vertebral subluxation. Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are adapted for the child's spine. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off can be traced to the spine. Health problems that emerge in adulthood could often be prevented by having your children's spine checked by a chiropractor early. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and are healthier than their peers.
Actually, adjustments do not always produce a sound. Often, however, adjustments do create the sound of a spinal "release", or "popping" sound. The sound is caused by gas rushing in to fill the partial vacuum created when the joints are slightly separated. This sound is painless and totally harmless.
A recent article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health reported on a study that documented the positive effects of chiropractic adjustments on a four year-old male.
A four year-old male presented with complaints of otitis media, adenoid swelling, nasal congestion, and fluid buildup and hearing loss in both ears associated with speech difficulties, developmental delay, and behavioral concerns.
Otitis media accounted for 24.5 million doctor’s visits in 1990 and it is also the most common reason for emergency room visits among children. This child had been previously diagnosed by his pediatrician and an ENT physician with bilateral hearing loss, fluid build-up in the middle ears, swollen adenoids, and swollen nasal tissue. His parent also mentioned he was diagnosed with expressive speech delay and developmental delay with behavioral issues.
Developmental delay, noticed by his mother, included not speaking at an age appropriate time and level of language was behind. Behavioral issues were related to impulsiveness with difficulty sitting, waiting and being on task. The child had also completed approximately 5 cycles of amoxicillin over the last three years and sporadically used Nasonex nasal spray 3 times per week depending on his level of congestion.
The patient’s mother was concerned about his developmental delay and possible need for surgical intervention. Shortly after the initiation of chiropractic care the mother reported her son was no longer using Nasonex for two reasons: she did not want him on medication and was beginning to see improvements. After 11 chiropractic adjustments, the patient’s re-evaluation with the ENT physician revealed resolution of otitis media, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal congestion, hearing loss and improvement of speech, development and behavior.
This is just one study, but the role of chiropractic and its beneficial effects on the immune system merit further investigation.
Since a good night's sleep is one of the most important requirements for complete healing, restoring normal sleep is a desired effect of any Chiropractic care plan. It's common for many regular Chiropractic clients to see an improvement in sleeping habits within the first week of care, regardless of the condition they come in with. Sleeping better is a common 'side effect' when normal alignment is restored at the C1/C2 area, and no drugs have to be involved!
A misaligned atlas or axis can be determined with simple Chiropractic tests like Thermography, Upper Cervical X-Rays or posture analysis. If you know someone suffering with poor sleep, tell them to save their money on a new pillow and have their upper neck evaluated by a chiropractor. If we can get you sleeping better, we can get you healing better.

I am not a Chiropractor, I am a Chiropractic Assistant. I work directly with my Chiropractor to meet the needs of our new and existing patients. I pride myself in the ability to educate all of our patients about the benefits of Chiropractic care! With this said, I’d like to share with you something that I find to be absolutely amazing…
Last week I met with a 4 year old boy who was having new bedwetting symptoms and chest pains (lung related).
In his exam I was explaining the spine and a subluxation, “These yellow things are called nerves. They go out to your organs and body parts. If a bone moves out of place, you can feel pain or sometimes you’ll have accidents, like at night when you don’t mean to. It’s your body telling you something is not in place. Our doctor can put these bones back where they should be and you’ll start feeling better and you probably won’t have accidents!”
I also explained to him that the skull protects your brain, but that isn’t shown on my model. He was very receptive.
After his first adjustment, he slept REALLY well and didn’t have ANY accidents! (YAY!) After his second adjustment he was feeling better, slept well and still NO accidents! (Whoo hoo!!!)
Yesterday was his 7 year old sister’s exam. While I was talking to her about what’s going on, he interrupted to explain to his sister that, “These are nerves. They are why we feel pain if this moves (he moved the vertebrae on our model of the spine).” When he was moving the skull part, his sister asked what it was and he replied, “It’s a shield.”
His mom and I both smiled, and she told him, “Yes, the skull is a shield for your brain.” Monday he celebrated his 5th birthday. You know, I have some adult practice members that don’t understand a subluxation and many cannot explain why they come to the chiropractor… They just know they feel better when they come in for care. This little 5 year old just grasped the simple logic. I pray we will continue to improve the health and well-being of many other children in our community. Enhancing a child’s sports performance, attention span during school, improving their behavior by reducing/eliminating their pain and teaching them about the wonders of the human body is important. Together we can achieve a healthier community and reduce the use of unnecessary prescription medication for both children and adults alike, through the power of a chiropractic adjustment!
With love,
Your child-loving Chiropractic Assistant and Educator,
Jessica Lynn
